Secrets about Intralipid therapy
By Faye Pakaki – our Fertility Midwife Coordinator
Intralipid is a 20% intravenous fat emulsion used routinely as a source of fat and calories for patients requiring parental nutrition. Research and clinical experience suggests that Intralipid may be able to restrain the natural killer cells’ activity, thus aiding the implantation procedure and the early progress of an embryo.
Intralipid infusions can help women who have a history of implantation failure, and early miscarriages. The elevated killer cell activity can act against an embryo and prevent its implantation into the endometrium and its growth.
Intravenous drip infusions is administered over a period of 1-2 hours ,every 3-4 weeks for a total of 2-4 infusions. The first a few days before the embryo transfer, the second after a positive pregnancy test, the next after u/s pregnancy confirmation.
There are no serious adverse effects with the infusion – although some patients may experience headache, nausea and flu-like symptoms. A patient should inform the doctor if she is known to have allergies to soy oil, eggs, peanut, peanut-based products or any active ingredients in the Intralipid infusion.
Treatment is available for women independently or as part of a treatment cycle at Assisting Nature IVF always under anesthesiologist supervision.
